The Parish Nurse Ministry of Good Shepherd incorporates the practice of faith with the practice of nursing. Parishioners' needs may be addressed through support and prayer, health education, referral to community resources and collaboration with pastor and staff. Each of the area churches with parish nurses designs their program based on the unique skills of the nurse and the needs and desires of the church. Good Shepherd's Parish Nurse, Vivian Byrd, also incorporates health assessment, visits to parishioners (in the home, hospital or nursing home), and transportation. She is our advocate in healthcare settings, helping communicate with doctors, therapists, etc. She also helps the rector by integrating faith and healing to those who are hurting.
Mission Outreach is the service committee of Good Shepherd. It is considered in the annual budget and funded by individual contributions as well. Those monies have been used to purchase eye glasses, when requested, for school children, to support CUOC, Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, Salvation Army Camp Scholarships, and the Prison Chaplaincy.
Good Shepherd supports The Room In The Inn (RITI) program by providing food and overnight chaperones on a rotating basis with other area churches. RITI, sponsored by the Christian United Outreach Center (CUOC), provides food and shelter for people with a short term need. Four weeks each year, Good Shepherd supplies the necessary volunteers and food for the week.
Individuals have also supported the Pregnancy Care Center and Prison with meals at holiday time. Parishioners purchases Christmas gifts for the Angel Tree program. This fall Good Shepherd will host Stop Hunger Now in coordination with Asheboro and Randolph Rotary Clubs. Stop Hunger Now is an organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life saving aid across the world. Volunteers will gather to measure, weigh and package a variety of grains, dried soy and vegetables to be shipped to one of over 40 countries that home the hungry and destitute. Our goal is to package 10,000 meals!
The flower guild provides an important contribution to the worship experience at Good Shepherd. Guild members create floral arrangements for Sunday worship services as well as for weddings, funerals and special decorations for holidays.
Each Sunday during the year, parishioners may donate funds for altar flowers as a memorial for loved ones or in honor of a special event. No design experience is required, as new members are paired with experienced members to learn. We are always happy to welcome new members with or without experience. There are many ways that contributions can be made to the Flower Guild. Help is always needed in conditioning the flowers as well as disassembling the arrangements. The only requirement is a love of flowers and interest in serving God and Good Shepherd in a unique and special way.

The Dorcas Group, named after the woman of good works and charitable deeds in the ninth book of Acts. This group meets weekly to knit and crochet hats and prayer shawls for the ill and infirmed in area hospitals and facilities.
The Ladies’ Night Out group meets for dinner and fellowship about once every other month. Strong bonds have formed as the women of Good Shepherd have gotten to know each other, as well as invitees from outside our parish. The cost is about $20 to cover dinner and there are several exciting events planned for the Fall.
The ladies also get together for the past several years, for day-long and overnight retreats. Selected area clergy or laypeople lead the group in spiritual growth.
